Intrepid Ibex Release Less than 2 1/2 Weeks Away

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

I just read in the Ubuntu Mailing List that the release freeze is immenient which is going to happen tomorrow. This post on the mailing list is from Yesterday.

With the release of Ubuntu 8.10 less than 2 1/2 weeks away, it will shortly
be time to freeze the archive to limit the number of last-minute changes
entering the release.  On Thursday, October 16, the archive will be frozen,
after which uploads to main will require approval from the release team and
should be done only for changes which are critical for the release.

Since the archive is going to be frozen tomorrow anything that has to be uploaded will have to be approved. Remember that only the critical bug fixes will most likely be allowed.

The list of release-critical bugs is tracked here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+bugs?field.milestone=1326

Additional bugs that are considered “targets of opportunity” for the release
are found at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+bugs

If there are other bugs that you believe are important to fix before the
release which are not yet listed on the above pages, please get in touch
with me or another member of the release team.

Any bugs that can be squashed will be helpful as I have been using Intrepid for a while now and have been having some problems. Half of the bug reports could not be verified as the firefox3-dbgsym will not run on any Firefox above 3.0-b5. The other half of my bug reports is Inkscape. It has been verified but as far as I can tell nothing has been done on it.

Although uploads to main must be approved by the release team before they
are accepted, this does not mean that you need to get approval from the
release team prior to upload.  If you have a reasonable belief that the
upload will be accepted (for example, because it includes minimal changes
necessary to fix a release-targetted bug), you are encouraged to upload
directly, so that the package can be reviewed in the “unapproved” queue
itself.

For uploads to universe and multiverse, the MOTU Release Team has published
their guidelines for freeze exceptions here:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2008-April/025259.html

If you have any questions about this process, please follow up to the
ubuntu-devel mailing list.

Thanks,

Steve Langasek
On behalf of the Ubuntu release team

So as Steve said you can upload directly if your fixes include minimum changes to complete the bug fix… though the fix will be in the unapproved queue while waiting for confirmation.

Flock 2-Beta3

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

The new Flock 2 beta is out and is ready to get the social networking started. In Flock 2 Beta three I have not seen many updates or anything else. The GUI still looks great and I have reason to believe that it will be faster in the end of development then FireFox 3.

I can digg posts on digg.com, I also can login to facebook, pownce, twitter and much much more, (though I should say I do not have facebook, pownce or twitter as I am not really much of a socializing kind of guy.) I can still edit my blog from Flock, but I decided to use FireFox 3.0.3 to write this.

I do like Flock for its’ speed and GUI, but in the end it is not the browser for me.

Screenshots to come.

VLC 0.9.3

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

In Ubuntu Intrepid, if you install vlc media player you will get the new and improved VLC 0.9.3. I have not used VLC Media Player since version 0.9.2d and I do like it. The new interface looks great and works nicely.

It was easy to install in Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install vlc

Looks like I have more then 300 updates to install so I will have to cut this post short.

Overall This is a pretty great media player, I will continue to use it.

Media Center with WiFi.

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Now playing in my living room as I watch movies, and TV Shows that I bought are going to compete with the new Wireless N USB adapter that can let me watch movies and go on the internet at the same time.

Here are the steps I have taken to get it working:

  1. Get a media center
  2. Wipe Windows off of it.
  3. Install Mythbuntu
  4. Have Mythbuntu malfunction
  5. Install Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
  6. Install dcss2 which makes Ubuntu able to play movies from a disc.
  7. Install proprietary ATI drivers.
  8. Resize the screen with the screen resolution application in The System>Preferences>Screen Resolution.
  9. Install ndisgtk (which also installs ndiswrapper-common and ndiswrapper-utils-1.9)
    sudo apt-get install ndisgtk
  10. Open Gnome-terminal: Type in Command: ndisgtk > choose to install driver> go to the .inf file in the directory from where you copied it off the cd. Click Done after.
  11. I always do this after I install drivers: Reboot (for those who love to do this in the command line: sudo shutdown -r now )

Thats it. I have worked on this problem for a couple of months now and have finally figured it out!
