Review of Ubuntu 8.10 Final

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Hey Everyone! I have a review about Ubuntu 8.10 Final! Most reviews come after a few days, but this one will come over two weeks after the release. So lets get started.

I love Ubuntu, but do not let that make you think that I would choose Ubuntu over many other distros, though I have not found one that I liked that I would stick with.

Ubuntu released this beauty on October 30th 2008 and I have seen myself up grade to the final release on my media center, and my laptop which I go and use to write these posts. I have also heard that my friend Tom Dryer from http://Tombuntu.com has done a clean install of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex. I love to see the changes in the speed, which for the most part are a lot faster then hardy. I can have my laptop boot in under 45 seconds which is not shabby though I do have 2 GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo inside also.

The themes are nice, but as Tom found one and wrote about it I downloaded it and installed it as soon as I saw it. Click Here to go to the post. I have chosen this one to stick with for the rest of the time I use Ubuntu 8.10 because there is no doubt in my mind that I think it looks great and adds a nice contrast to the other Ubuntu Colors. Hey I love Blue and it has some black in it so they go nice together.

The applications work lovely. The bug I wrote about for Firefox, which I do not know what happened with it, has just about gone away, I had the problem today but it was the first time in nearly a month since that has happened. Transmission has worked well when I download Linux Distributions. I still prefer Deluge-Torrent though. Pidgin works great as I use that sometimes when I do not want to use my web browser (Firefox 3.0.3) or my iPod Touch. I also installed Skype from the website and this is a great thing to have… if anyone was ever on. :( But incase anyone is ever on I will be able to use it with my headset microphone. Rhythym Box works great, I have not seen any new features since the last Ubuntu Release though. Maybe I am not looking hard enough. I also installed VLC Media Player from the repositories. As I have talked about before I use Brasero to burn CDs’ and DVDs’. This is a great set of programs that come with this great operating system.

As I have said the speed, applications, and most of the bugs have been fixed which is great. I highly recommend this Distribution to anyone who wants to use a Linux Distribution that is easy to use and easy to customize to your own needs.

Fedora 10 Preview Review

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

I have been using this preview of Fedora 10 and it is great. I have timed the boot from start to finish and it was on this virtual machine 30 seconds. I believe it is well worth the effort to try this one when it comes out. Empathy the new Instant Messenger for Fedora 10 is great except for a few problems:

  1. I can log into Gtalk and it works but no MSN Messenger
  2. There is a problem saying there was a network error… problem was that I logged right into it on Ubuntu 8.10 with no problems or errors.

Those are the problems so far. Other applications are not so upto date:

  1. Firefox is 3.0.2-1 in Fedora 10… I do like Firefox 3.0.2 but there was a security update not so long ago, and I would like to be as secure as possible.

SO far Firefox is the only application that seems out of date. I am installing updates now so maybe it will fix it.

I really like the artwork in Fedora 10 as it brings out the nice colors of blue. I really love blue for some reason which is why in Ubuntu I change the theme to blue. The background is nice and as always it is blue. It looks like it is a star in space.

Overall I believe that it is a great upgrade over the last Fedora which I had on my laptop for all of 5 hours as it was not as great as all the people said it was. I will continue to use Ubuntu and I may try out some more distros to see how great they are.

Rememberance Day

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

I would like to thank all the people who fought for Canada in the Wars of the past, present, and future (lets hope there are none, but in all likelihood there will be some.)

I will remember the people who have fought for the country and who died because they wanted to bring peace to the world.

Thank you Veterans and all the people who fought to make the world a better place.

Fedora 10 Preview

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Yes Fedora 10 Preview is hot on Ubuntu 8.10s’ heels as the preview has been released on November 4th 2008. I have decided to test out Fedora 10 in a virtual machine while using Ubuntu. There will be a few things I am going to test:

  1. 30 Second boot speed
  2. How fast it is in a 512 mb of ram virtual hard drive.
  3. The Empathy Instant Messenger
  4. and a few more things when I think of them.

So I will start the testing today, Monday November 10th 2008 and will write a review sometime before the release.

Folding@Home applications

Friday, November 7th, 2008

You can get these applications that monitor your folding at home. I am using a Windows Program call FahMon in wine.

You can get FAHmon here.

I chose the Windows client as I did not want to compile the source for Linux as I am not skilled with doing so.

I  started using FAH about a week ago and will probably not stop using it for a long long time. If you want to join my team to the team site.

I really want to find a cure for cancer so that people would not have to suffer. I hope that when we all start to use folding at home we can overcome the time with the computers processing power that we have today and most likely save lives in the process.

Laptops close to the one I have.

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

These laptops are similliar to the one I have at home. These run Windows but you can wipe it off and put on Intrpid Ibex from Ubuntu after you get it. You will get the same experience on the laptops that are like mine as you would get from a laptop that runs Ubuntu on an Intel Processor Notebook.

Windows 7 Pre-Beta

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

I have found the pre-beta of Windows 7 on the net. So I downloaded it and installed it in a virtual machine. I have had a few problems:

  1. Internet drivers do not work!
  2. The new theme they showed off at PDC is not on the build as now you need a hack to get it working.
  3. When I installed the internet drivers I get “Code 10 could not start.”

That is what has happened so far and yes I know it is pre-beta and that it will not always work but for it to find the drivers, and not install them properly is a big big problem and is a big big bug. So I hope that in their beta that they will fix this problem as I have no way to upgrade to the next bug fixes.

If you have any ideas on how to get this working leave a comment and I will happily try it out.
