A Review of Sony Vaio VGN-NR285D Laptop

This laptop is only available in Canada, though you can get similar laptops all over the world. This laptop compared to my other laptop was the easiest to work with Linux. I had all the video and wireless cards working right out of the box with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. The only thing was when I went to Windows it was always slow, taking away my valuable working time and then one time it would not boot. I decided that for windows to be on it, which was a problem, would be a giant thorn in the side, when I was working on a computer meant for speed. So I went to Ubuntu and I cannot believe what I have seen! The battery life is longer on Ubuntu then on Windows Vista, plus the whole computer runs faster then my last laptop seeing as I had an AMD Turion X2 TL-50. I enjoy the whole thing and how I could just have any Linux just boot up and work, which has always been my dream since becoming a Linux user back in January 2005. I really have enjoyed this adventure that seems to twist and turn at every stop and start. Okay back to the laptop. The specs are:

  1. Core 2 Duo T5450 1.67 GHZ each core.
  2. Intel x3100 accelerated graphics
  3. Super Multi-layer DVD and CD Burner.
  4. 4 USB 2.0 Ports
  5. A VGA port
  6. Firewire port or maybe a mini usb port
  7. A microphone and a headphone ports
  8. A SD and SDPro card slots
  9. and finally a modem port and ethernet port.

Pictures will come up on the blog as soon as possible, while I try to get this school year over with. I guess I have made the switch to Intel from AMD for a long time coming as I have thoroughly enjoy having my laptop work out of the box with Linux.

Over all I have enjoyed every minute with my laptop and Hope it keeps on going for a long time, but if not I have a 2 year extended warranty that I would happily use.

  1. Same laptop. Same experience.

    Vista was unusable
Hardy was awesome out of the box, though I still have issues with screen brightness.

    Good little review.
