Vector Linux 6.0 “Light Live” Released.

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

I would normally only report about Ubuntu or other distributions that I would normally work with, but Vector Linux was the first Linux Distro that I had ever used.

Today, Vector Linux 6.0 Light Live was released. It has a KDE Desktop and Pidgin, but you cannot install with it. The Live Install Cd should come soon. This is just a see how it looks and maybe you will want to install it when the install CD comes out.

Here is an excerpt from the release announcement: (Excerpt comes from Distrowatch.com:)

Robert Lange has announced the release of VectorLinux 6.0 “Light Live” edition: “The VectorLinux team is happy to announce VectorLinux 6.0 ‘Light Live’. This edition is intended as a preview of the traditional installable release. It closely mirrors the original VectorLinux ‘Light’, but some packages have been added or upgraded, including the 2.6.27.29 kernel. This is a great way to test VectorLinux before committing to a hard drive install. For us who already use it, our favorite operating system is now portable. Another practical use is as a live toolbox for troubleshooting and/or repair. There is a boot option for using it as a rescue disc for a previously installed system. Re-mastering VectorLinux ‘Live’ has been made easy for those who want their very own, personalized edition.

Windows Live 2009 is Crap!

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

I have a Windows 7 and a Windows XP computer. I have installed the latest Windows Live Messenger and I have trouble logging in. This started with it “Could not find my contacts” now it cannot find “My internet connection.”

I and a lot of people do not want to have to troubleshoot a product that is windows based on a windows machine.

Solution: Use pidgin. Download at: www.pidgin.im. It is Open Source and works great. It may not have all the features that Windows Live has but I have used it a lot and I love it. So if you are having trouble with your Windows Live Messenger use Pidgin.

How to (try to) install SAM Linux 2009 (Live CD)

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

SAM Linux is a PCLinuxOS based Distro with the XFCE Desktop Environment.

You have to log in to use the live cd. First you see Guest Account. To log in to Guest you can use Username Guest and Password guest.

  1. Before you start to install you have to be using Root.
  2. So in the login screen use Username root, password root to login.
  3. For me it has taken me to the PCLinuxOS desktop branding.
  4. So I went to XFCE button on the bottom desktop.
  5. Next you want to go to the system menu.
  6. Click on the GTK Live install.
  7. I have this running in a virtual machine so that if anything happens it will not affect my computer.
  8. After going through the dialog boxes click close on the Dialog Box saying something about the poor mans installation.
  9. After that I went to create partitions.
  10. In the partitions  dialog box I clicked on the the EXT3 box (I believe it is in Red) and put all the amount of hard disk in the root partition: /.
  11. After you need to click OK and it will format that drive after you press ok again.
  12. After the install will start copying files.
  13. After the copying of files are done click done it will ask you if you want to save the /etc/fstab modifications.
  14. Click NO if you are using a USB flash drive.
  15. Now that it is done take out the CD.

It probably will not work as it did not for me but if you can figure it out tell me so I can update the post.
